Native Americans
    Before the Europeans settled in New Netherland, there were, of course, Native Americans living there. There were three different major tribes in New Netherland:

• Delaware
• Mohican
• Mohawk

    The Dutch had a lucrative trade with these tribes. Unfortunately, also, a number of wars occurred between the Native Americans and the New Netherlanders. A few of the settlers and the Native Americans did marry and have children (such as the Van Slykes).
