Last Names in New Netherland

Most of the first generation settlers (and some of the later generations) in New Netherland did not have surnames, last names (such as Boyd) that has been passed down from generation to generation, (usually father to child). As time progressed, particularly after the English took over the colony and renamed it New York, Dutch colonial families began to adopt surnames of their own. Knowing a little about how the Dutch used and developed last names often yields clues about our Dutch ancestors.
