The Roots of New Netherland

    Middle Ages

The area now known as the Netherlands was a group of independent counties and duchies.

1555

The Low Countries, which includes Belgium and the Netherlands came under the control of the Spanish Hapsburg dynasty.

1568

The Dutch, led by Prince William of Orange, rebelled against Spain. The war for Dutch independence would last eighty years.

1579

Seven Dutch provinces make a defensive pact against Spain known as the Union of Utrecht.

1581

The States General (Dutch Parliament) renounce their allegiance to King Philip II of Spain with the Act of Abjuration at The Hague.

1602

The United East India Company was chartered by the States General of the United Provinces of the Netherlands.
