   1609

Henry Hudson commands ship the Halve Maen, belonging to the East India Company, and explores Delaware Bay and up the Hudson River, up to as far as present-day Albany, New York.

1614

The first appearance of the name New Netherland in an official document occurs.
The States General licensed the New Netherland Company.
Fort Nassau, a fur trading post, was established on Castle Island, near present-day Albany.

1617

Fort Nassau is destroyed and a new fort is built at Norman’s Kill on the banks of the Hudson.

1621

The West India Company (WIC) was chartered by the States General and given a trade monopoly in New Netherland.
